It operates in the former house of spiritual exercises and Jesuit College established in 1740, which retains the Capilla del Carmen. It was then used as amentally insane hospital from the Bethlemita order and a prison for women from 1822 to 1978.
It was opened in 1980; this museum is located in an 18th century building. Its rooms exhibit elements of the Argentine prison system, among other elements, weapons, uniforms of the Federal Penitentiary Service of different periods, elements made by prisoners, furniture and photographic material from the former jail in Tierra del Fuego.
